New hopes for gene therapy

چکیده

Hopes were running high at the end of the 20th century. The newly hatched internet economy took off, the Cold War was consigned to history, two separate teams were racing to sequence the human genome, and once that was in the databanks, surely we would understand much more about our diseases and develop new cures based on the genetic insights. And Al Gore might become US president and do something about climate change. Fifteen years on, humanity has achieved very little of what we may have reasonably hoped for at the approach of the millennium. Genomics has delivered unprecedented insights into evolution and functional biology, but fallen short on the headline goal of addressing common medical problems like cancer and heart disease. The idea of repairing defective genes causing diseases suffered even more disappointment. In September 1999, Jesse Gelsinger, an 18-year-old patient with ornithine transcarbamylase deficiency taking part in a clinical trial for a gene therapy treatment, died after a severe immune response to the adenovirus

Integrated Technologies Like Noninvasive Brain Stimulation (NIBS) for Stroke Rehabilitation New Hopes for Patients, Neuroscientists, and Clinicians in Iran

A B S T R A C TThe applications of neurophysiological therapy techniques range far and few in the realm of modern day medicine. However, the concept of electromagnetic stimulation, the basis for many noninvasive brain stimulation (NIBS) techniques today, has been of interest to the scientific community since the late nineteenth century. Recently, transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) a...

Beta thalassemia gene therapy using lentiviral vectors

Recent years, allogeneic bone marrow transplantation (BMT) has proved to be the successful cure for patients with thalassemia major, however this is restricted due to limited matched-related donor. Its complications include chronic graft-versus-host disease in 5-8% of patients. So, a molecular approach, such as gene therapy for direct normal beta globin gene transmission, seems quite promising ...

O 8: Tenasin-C as a New Target for Multiple Sclerosis Treatment

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease, which is characterized by demyelination and neuroinflammation. Extracellular Matrix (ECM) have important role in the central nervous system (CNS). Alterations are happening to the ECM after the CNS disorder like MS, Alzheimer and other neural injury. Tenasin-C (TnC) is a glycoprotein that is highly expressed in inflammatory conditions of the CNS...

The Effect of Herpes Simplex Virus Virion Host Shutoff Gene- a New Suicide Gene- on Tumor Cells

Background: The herpes simplex virus (HSV) UL41 gene product, virion host shutoff (Vhs) protein, mediates the rapid degradation of both viral and cellular mRNA. This ability suggests that Vhs protein can be used as a suicide gene in cancer gene therapy applications. The recent reports have shown that the degradation of cellular mRNA during herpes simplex infection is selective. RNA containing A...
